The Bruins regular season wasn’t the best, but the Bruins are showing up in the awards.
Patrice Bergeron and Loui Eriksson have been nominated for the Selke and Lady Byng trophies respectively.
basically the Bergeron trophy, am i right?
The Selke nomination for Bergeron marks his fifth nomination, and has won the last two Selke trophies. The Selke is awarded to the “most defensive offensive player”, or the best two way player. If won this season, Bergeron will tie former Canadiens forward Bob Gainey for most Selke trophies all time.
Bob Gainey is in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Does the Selke win this year guarantee a HHOF spot for Bergeron? I think it DOES.
Bergy is up against Ryan Kesler of the Anaheim Ducks and Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings. Kesler won the Selke once previously, and Kopitar has been nominated but never won.
The Quebec native played 80 games this season, totaling 32 goals and 36 assists, with a +12 rating. For comparison, Kesler finished the season with a +5 rating, and Kopitar with a +34.
the best mustache in the NHL.
The Lady Byng nomination marks the first award nomination for Sweden native Loui Eriksson. Eriksson had his best season in 5 years, finishing with 30 goals and 33 assists in 82 games. The Lady Byng is the award given to the “player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability,” and this season has shown why Eriksson will be a highly sought after free agent. Eriksson finished the season with 12 penalty minutes, all of them minor penalties, all while maintaining that awesome Swedish mustache.
To compare, last years winner, Florida Panthers forward Jiri Hudler finished with 14 penalty minutes, all of them minor as well.
A bunch of awards still have yet to announce their finalists, so once we get more Bruins nominees, I will post another update!
see you in october
